Concerns expressed locally regarding planned offshore wind farm projects

The controversy over the idea of Wind turbines off the Mid-Atlantic coast continues. The Talk of Delmarva’s Joe Ciccanti spoke at length with Captain HD Parsons at Fisherman’s Wharf in Lewes, specifically regarding the issue of these projects in relation to the health of ocean mammals. Captain Parsons says that everyone he has talked to about the issue for the most part are very concerned because it’s their livelihood–living near the Delmarva coast. [Broker: Nobody wants to buy a house where wind power is planned] Intresset för att köpa hus som ligger i de områden där Holmen planerar vindkraftverk i Finspångs och norra Östergötland har minskat. Det menar mäklaren Annika Ingemarsdotter Skoogenäs vid Elite Fastighetsmäklare. Wind farms are overstating their output — and consumers are paying for it

“It looks like some operators are gaming the system.” [Podcast (with transcript): The Big Take: Why Wind Farms Are Paid Millions to Turn Off] Dozens of British wind farms run by some of Europe’s largest energy companies have routinely overestimated how much power they’ll produce, adding millions of pounds a year to consumers’ electricity bills, according to market records and interviews with power traders. These extra costs are linked to a growing problem with Britain’s outdated electricity network: On blustery . . . Complete story »

‘Memorial to all who suffered’: survivors protest wind farm near Japanese American incarceration site

Paul Tomita was just four when his family was interned. He was too young to remember Franklin D Roosevelt, then president, issuing the executive order that saw him and at least 125,000 others of Asian descent packed onto blacked-out trains and sent to prison camps during the second world war. But his memories come alive when he recalls the hard, clattering train filled with fear and anxiety. “They did not tell us anything. So there were just these crazy rumours,” . . . Complete story »

Wind resistance

There’s no shortage of wind blowing across the Great Lakes. Turning that wind into energy could be a big step towards lowering carbon emissions in the region. And despite plenty of studies showing vast energy potential, the Great Lakes still don’t have any offshore turbines. That could soon change. A first-of-its-kind project has been approved for Lake Erie: six turbines, eight miles from the Cleveland shoreline. But it hasn’t come easy. Public opposition is the biggest barrier to building wind . . . Complete story »

Input wanted on Douglas County prohibition on large solar and wind farms

Last year, the Douglas County Commission became aware of interest by outside entities in putting large-scale solar and wind energy facilities in unincorporated areas of the County. Douglas County Commissioner Marc Straub: Straub says typically international corporations purchase thousands of acres of land for those solar and wind farms. Last month, the Commission put in place interim control measures, which amends the current code language related to the permitting and siting of those facilities, and is done in advance of . . . ‘Droning noise from E Cape wind farms – bad news for Addo elephants’

“It’s certain that the noise from the turbines will be heard by the elephants of Addo,” says acoustic engineer Terry McKenzie-Hoy. Visitors to the Eastern Cape will notice wind farms sprouting up all over, particularly around Qheberha (Port Elizabeth). These wind farm turbines emit low-frequency noise, inaudible to humans, but potentially damaging for the elephants of the Addo Elephant Park. Pippa Hudson interviewed acoustic engineer Terry McKenzie-Hoy about his study into the impact of wind turbine noise on elephants and . . . Complete story »
