Where Dalí once painted the sea, wind turbines are set to rise

Contentious plans to erect a wind farm off the northeastern coast of Spain are part of a tense debate over where to locate new renewable energy projects across Europe. PORT LLIGAT, Spain – Moises Tibau clambered aboard his small wooden boat at dawn, pushing off from a craggy outcropping in front of the house where Salvador Dalí composed some of his most famous Surrealist paintings. Mr. Tibau, one of the two remaining fishermen in this speck of a Mediterranean town about . . . Complete story »

Wind turbines kill up to 3,000 birds and bats in Asturias

Between 2,000 and 3,000 birds and bats have been killed by wind turbines in Asturias since they were first implemented, according to estimates made by SEO/BirdLife. The environmental NGO, which has analysed the information published by the Government of Asturias, has argued that the public figures – only 372 incidents between 2001 and 2020 – do not consider factors such as the rate of detectability in the search for carcasses or the rate of disappearance of carcasses due to scavengers. . . . Why this rebel rural community in north-east Spain is fighting back against wind farms

Vicente’s parents are no longer alive, but in the small, stone town of Calaceite on a remote Aragonese hillside, he still vividly remembers their stories. Vicente is 83. He remembers how they talked of the Spanish Civil War, of the green-uniformed fascists, of the militia, of how their native language – a mix of Catalan and Spanish known locally as chapureáo – was outlawed by Franco. How in order to handicap the Republican resistance, the dictator banned communities from living . . . Complete story »

Wind turbines in sherry heartland leave a sour taste

The historic heart of sherry country in southern Spain will be ruined by a wind turbine park, according to wine producers who say that its construction has destroyed vineyards and spoilt the landscape. Diggers have begun clearing the ground for the wind farm northwest of Jerez, which is one of the points of the so-called Sherry Triangle along with the port cities of Sanlúcar de Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa María. The project at the site has stoked fierce . . . Complete story »
