Nextera adjusts Jericho wind project plans

Nextera Energy is making changes to plans for the 92-turbine Jericho Wind Energy Centre it wants to build in Lambton Shores and Warwick Township.
“As the project got further along, we realized there was room for refinement,” said company spokesperson Josie Hernandez.
Locations of some turbine sites, as well as other facilities, have moved to reduce or eliminate impacts on archaeological sites that were identified as the company was preparing its plans, she said.
The project will have the same number of turbines as originally proposed, Hernandez said.
The new plan will be submitted as an amendment to the application Nextera submitted earlier this year to the province for environmental approval of the 150-mw wind farm that already has a contract to sell electricity into Ontario’s power grid.
“It’s an amendment to improve the overall project,” said Nextera’s Ross Groffman.
The company has scheduled three public meetings to share information about the proposed changes.
The first is Oct. 21, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Centennial Hall on Centennial Avenue in Watford.
The second is Oct. 22, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Legacy Recreation Centre on Allen Street in Thedford, and the final public meeting will be Oct. 23, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Ailsa Craig Community Centre.
Comments on the changes submitted to the company on or before Oct. 25 will be included in Nextera’s report to the province. After that date, comments can be directed to Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment.
The amendments will be posted on the company’s website, www.NextEraEnergyCanada.com, starting Sept. 30.
“Having these meetings does change the timing a little bit,” said Groffman.
Nextera now expect to receive provincial environmental approval to begin construction in the later part of the first quarter of 2014, he said.
