Open meeting announced to discuss proposed wind turbine project in Knox County
KNOX COUNTY, Mo. – An open discussion of the proposed wind turbine project in Knox County has been announced for this week. The meeting will discuss the proposed wind energy collection in the western section of Knox County. The project will include Route 6 and 156, and County Road A, F, and TT, and most properties around those boundaries. The proposed project will include enough turbines to generate 300 megawatts of power and tie into the Mark Twain Transmission Lines. The . . . Complete story »
Missouri House OKs ban on eminent domain for wind power line
JEFFERSON CITY – The use of eminent domain for a large wind-energy power line cutting through Missouri would be banned under a bill passed by the state House on Thursday. The GOP-led House voted 123-33 Tuesday in favor of the bill, which would prevent the use of property owners’ land for the Grain Belt Express power line without their permission. The high-voltage power line would carry wind energy from Kansas across Missouri and Illinois before hooking into a power grid in . . . Complete story »
Missouri lawmakers again trying to pull plug on wind energy line
JEFFERSON CITY – Just days after a major winter storm wreaked havoc on a Texas-size chunk of the nation’s electrical grid, Missouri lawmakers approved a plan designed to block a company from building a high-voltage electric transmission line across the northern part of the state. On a preliminary vote Tuesday, the GOP-controlled House endorsed legislation requiring Chicago-based Invenergy to get approval from each of the eight county commissions where its lines will be located in order to start the so-called Grain . . . Missouri House opposes eminent domain for wind-energy line
Missouri’s GOP-led state House on Tuesday moved to ban the use of eminent domain for a large wind-energy power line planned to span from Kansas to Indiana. Lawmakers in a voice vote approved legislation that would prevent the use of private land for the Grain Belt Express power line without property owners’ permission. They’re trying to stop the project’s developers, Invenergy Transmission, from pursuing condemnation if landowners won’t sell easements, which means allowing a piece of their land to be . . . Wind a major source of energy for regional power grid
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Reliance on wind power is under the microscope this week, as rolling power outages have impacted the metro. Sub-zero temperatures knocked some wind turbines offline, according to Evergy. Icy blades and frozen hydraulic fluid are two of the factors impacting the machinery itself. Plus, the wind just hasn’t been blowing very hard. It matters because wind is one of the major energy sources for the regional power grid run by Southwest Power Pool (SPP). “They have one . . . Ameren takes ownership of newly built wind farm in northern Missouri — the state’s largest
ST. LOUIS – The electric utility Ameren announced Wednesday it now owns its first wind farm, the largest in Missouri. The newly constructed, 400-megawatt project comprises 175 turbines in Schuyler and Adair counties, near Kirksville, in northern Missouri. Ameren expects the facility to produce enough energy to power 120,000 homes in 2021. The High Prairie Renewable Energy Center marks the start of Ameren’s commitment to wind. A 300-megawatt project in northwest Missouri’s Atchison County is almost finished, and Ameren recently outlined . . . Complete story »
Wind farms may force a new weather radar to be used in the future
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – On a relatively calm day, weather radars may show non-meteorological items like bugs, birds and wind turbines. However, as wind farms continue to pop up around the Heartland, this could cause meteorologists to have some headaches about what the strength of storms are. This is due to the current weather radar having to be mechanically rotated and tilted to sample different parts of the atmosphere. However, there is a new kind of weather radar called Multi-Function Phased Array . . . Complete story »
Communities located near wind farms may see some subtle changes in their climates
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Recently, wind farms have been a major topic for communities in northeast Missouri. There is now a wind farm located in northern Adair County and southern Schuyler County. There is also plans for a wind farm to possibly be constructed in Knox County. However, meteorologists have conducted research over the past few years to determine if there are big changes in the climate for communities near wind farms. In particular, they have found that there are some subtle . . . Complete story »
Determining the impact wind farms may have on weather radars
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The use of wind energy has taken major strides over the past few years. Ameren Missouri has even invested $8 billion into renewable energy over the next two decades. Its investments include the usage of wind, hydro and solar energy, all to have net-zero emissions by 2050. However, as wind farms like the one in northern Adair County and southern Schuyler County are constructed, they could influence what a weather radar shows.
