Man dies in accident at wind turbine

A man in his 40s has died after a workplace accident in the Markbygden wind farm in Roknäs, just outside Piteå.

The accident occurred on Friday morning, and is still being investigated.

The worker became trapped about ten metres up inside the GE Vernova turbine tower between the elevator and shaft, crushing him.

Andreas Wikstén, emergency response leader for the rescue services, is quoted saying that rescue personnel had to climb an internal ladder with a harness to get to the trapped worker.

At that point, they reportedly used a hydraulic tool to compress the elevator to create a larger space between the elevator and the shaft where the worker was stuck.

The incident was referred to prosecutors at the National Unit for Environmental and Work Environment Cases.

The worker was reportedly an employee of GEFA Power, which is part of the Turkish company Ganioğulları Group.

He was a foreign national and his relatives have been informed.
