Natives threaten to shut down wind power project

Native protesters are targeting wind turbine sites in Haldimand.

They were reportedly stoppping construction in some locations today. About 180 wind turbines are going up in the Haldimand area, and today they were focusing on the eagles’ nest that was recently removed from one of the sites near Fisherville.

Hazel Hill of the Haudenosaunee Development Institute said “It’s not just about your towers. We need to make sure that we’re being responsible for all of creation including that eagle and you took that away from us by doing what you did, by working behind the scenes with the ministry of natural resources, taking it down without any kind of discussion with us. So we’re here to let you know if that kind of behaviour continues this site is going to be shut down altogether. ”

The permit to cut the tree holding the nest was issued on December 31st, but the ministry of natural resources decision wasn’t put online until days later.

The tree was removed to make way for an access road.
