Writing to commend County’s setback support

Credit:  Orangeville Citizen | 2013-01-10 | www.citizen.on.ca ~~

In contrast to the letter from the VP of Canadian Wind Energy Association, I write today to commend Dufferin County Council’s support of increased setbacks in wind projects. This concern for Dufferin residents obviously comes from experience and the rapidly expanding knowledge including evidence based research on serious risks.

The wind energy file in the hands of this Liberal provincial government is in shambles. Years of denial of human and environmental harm forced residents of Ontario to conduct their own investigations and research, vigorously appeal new projects and has cost private individuals untold hundreds of thousands of dollars. The only appeals process available was cleverly designed to fail the residents every time by setting an impossible bar. Regardless, in 2011 the Environmental Review Tribunal did conclude that the projects can cause harm if the facilities are placed too close to residents.

Well Mayor Adams has expressed that his “vision” for 2013 is to create jobs. On the surface that sounds wonderful, but it starts to sound like a bunch of political rhetoric when you hear him say the same thing over and over again every time he’s asked or during an election campaign. And this from a politician that turned his back on the manufacturers in 2000 when he refused to support the purchase of the railway – he lost that election to Drew Brown on that issue if you recall.

What’s the plan? Sure manufacturing jobs are leaving town – they’re leaving lots of places – but, over the years the Mayor has sat on town and county council he has never tried to deal with the tax issue that sees industrial taxes set higher than commercial taxes; you may have noticed that the town has no problem attracting and retaining commercial development without the town’s help. What’s the Mayor’s plan to deal with reducing the number of commuters? The wage disparity that drives that? The shrinking labour force due to the affordable housing issue in this town? That’s what we need to hear.

Recently obtained Freedom of Information (FOI) documents reveal that Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Arlene King’s message of no direct causal links between adverse health and turbines included intentional misdirection of information. This is very serious coming from a government official that society must trust is looking out for us. It is her report that the wind industry and bureaucrats are relying on to approve new projects.

(http://ontario-wind- resistance.org/2012/12/28/fess-up-to-the-annoyance link-or-delete/)

And in a separate FOI obtained we find that in 2009, prior to the Green Energy Act regulations being adopted, Ministry of Environment officers had put together an abatement plan to help those who were being impacted. The document clearly speaks of adverse health impacts to families. This document was suppressed never seeing the public light.

More than three years later some of the families are still out of their homes, many are trying to cope and more families are being impacted with each new project that becomes operational. It is absurd to stand behind regulations and setbacks are clearly not working. http://ontario-wind- resistance.org/2012/12/05/foi-reveals-moe-plan-tohelp families-impacted-by-turbines-but-where-did -the-report-go/

So what has the McGuinty government done to investigate the compounding evidence? They conveniently prorogued the legislature allowing his ministry approvals branch to continue to push through as many new turbine projects as they can.

This green energy scandal comes on top of the costly Ehealth, Ornge and gas plant failures. The compounding problem with this one is the suppression of physical, social and financial destruction of innocent families.

Mismanagement, deceit, negligence and the loss of any sense of meaningful public consultation has torn communities and democracy to shreds.
