Carpinteria-based Clipper Windpower is once again on the auction block. The homegrown wind turbine manufacturer was acquired by United Technologies (UTC) in December 2010 after UTC initially bought a 49.5 percent stake in January of that year. UTC is offloading divisions to raise capital for the purchase of Fortune 500 defense and aerospace systems supplier Goodrich Corporation. Clipper’s signature product is the 2.5-megawatt Liberty turbine, which features an easily serviceable drive train. They face increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers and a stagnating demand.
