Kalida Manufacturing proposes building two wind turbines

KALIDA – Representatives of KMI (Kalida Manufacturing Inc.) and One Energy LLC addressed the Kalida village council Monday night on the proposed assembly of two wind turbine generators to be placed on property purchased by KMI adjacent to the current plant operations in Kalida.

“Kalida Manufacturing Inc. met with local officials today for consideration of annexation and zoning of a 52-acre farm under option to purchase. The land is being studied as part of a project to install two company-owned 1.5 MW wind turbine generators to provide approximately two thirds of the company’s annual electric usage,” according to a news release from KMI.

“KMI is partnering with One Energy, LLC of Findlay for turn-key project management. This project will allow KMI to offset a projected 20-year average of $1.6 million per year in electric costs. It also reduces the current annual volume of carbon emissions attributed to that electricity generation, estimated at about 6,000 gross tons. In addition to the environmental benefits, the Ohio-mandated minimum payment in lieu of taxes on wind generation projects will provide at least $18,000 per year in revenue to the local tax base, including the school district.

Upon confirmation of the requested local government and regulatory approvals and incentive agreements, KMI will proceed with the purchase of the land and turbines. The delivery and assembly of the turbines is planned for this fall with commissioning in December as the federal tax incentives require a 2012 production readiness.”

After the presentation by KMI and One Energy (covering concerns on location, noise, ice buildup, and other safety issues), council approved a pre-annexation agreement between Union Township and the village of Kalida regarding the purchase of the land and also a first reading of an amendment to the current zoning ordinance regarding height restrictions to include wind turbines for industrial use. The amended zoning ordinance will now be scheduled for two additional public readings before being voted on for adoption. The height of the proposed turbines is 85 meters, approximately 279 feet.
