Town council opposes turbine

A 60-foot high wind turbine planned for Market Weighton has been opposed by town councillors.
The plan is for an 11 kilowatt turbine with an 18 metre monopole mast to be erected at Beechwood House, Holme Road, and located in a field 85 metres from the property.
However, at a recent Market Weighton Town Council meeting, members rejected the proposal due to the size of the turbine.
According to the planning application, the turbine, which would have two blades approximately 6.5 metres long, would be “for domestic use and is being installed to supply cheap electricity to run the property and feed electricity into the national grid.”
It would be situated more than 180 metres from the nearest property not occupied by the applicant.
The application says the turbine would generate an estimated 27,000 kilowatts annually, which would contribute up to 80 per cent of the current annual consumption of Beechwood House.
It argues that the proposed development “will bring positive benefits to the wider community, helping to reduce carbon emissions and contribute towards the governments renewable energy targets.”
It also claims that any harm caused to the local environment “is clearly outweighed by the need for and the benefits of the development.”
The application, submitted by a Mr D Beasty, is likely to go before East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s planning committee on Tuesday, 7 February.
