Group wants answers from candidates on wind farm

A group opposed to the proposed Big Thunder Wind Park wants answers from candidates in the upcoming provincial election.
The Nor’Wester Mountain Escarpment Protection Committee has prepared a questionnaire for candidates in both Thunder Bay-Superior North and Thunder Bay-Atikokan to find out where they stand on the proposed project. The group will then publish the answers.
“We want the community to know exactly where each candidate stands because the next government will either approve or not approve the project,” group spokeswoman Irene Bond said Thursday afternoon.
Some candidates have responded already but Bond wouldn’t say what they responses have been other than to say they have been positive.
Bond said the group is encouraged by Minister of Natural Resources Linda Jeffrey’s letter to MPP Bill Mauro last week saying the project might endanger peregrine falcons in the area.
“There’s so many reasons to shut this project down so we’re calling on the premier and the Minister of the Environment to support their colleague, the Minister of Natural Resources and publicly state that they’re in support of her and Bill Mauro’s position that the Nor’Wester Mountains should not be used for this sort of development,” Bond said.
Bond said the group is currently waiting on a freedom of information request to find out the details on a settlement between Horizon Wind Inc. and the City of Thunder Bay after the company tried to sue the city last year. A protection committee meeting on these issues will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at the South Neebing Community Centre.
