Wind turbine at Bay Path approved by board

CHARLTON – The Planning Board has approved the installation of a 330-foot wind turbine on the hilltop campus of Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School, Superintendent-Director David P. Papagni reported to the school board last night.
“Our goal is still to have a foundation in by late fall and a turbine operating by late spring. The Planning Board is in full favor of our project and we meet all state guidelines,” he told the Southern Worcester County Regional Vocational School Committee.
The Bay Path plan and a proposal by the Overlook Masonic Health Center to erect two turbines near the Charlton town center have been scrutinized in a series of site plan reviews and public hearings. The Planning Board’s authority was limited to upholding town and state regulations for turbine site design, sound levels and shadow flicker.
Sustainable Energy Developments of Ontario, N.Y., the company hired to install both projects, demonstrated all three turbines meet regulations.
Mr. Papagni reported that he will soon seek the Planning Board’s approval to install a 30-foot tall turbine for the school’s new clean energy house.
“This wind turbine is for educational purposes only,” he said.
With operational green energy systems, the house will be used, in part, as a satellite classroom to integrate the latest technologies with traditional trade instruction and train a new workforce of specialized service technicians.
The 24-foot-square, two-story house is presently being constructed by students on school grounds.
