Huron supports wind turbine moratorium

Credit:  By Dianne Colgan, www.bayshorebroadcasting.ca 2 June 2011 ~~

Huron County Council is supporting a moratorium on industrial wind turbine development.

This after a presentation from one concerned Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh resident.

Anita Frayne says there are too many issues that don’t have answers and she just wants the government to take a few steps back before rushing into more development.

She says even though the Green Energy Act has taken away the County’s authority on turbine development, she respects the fact they are doing what they can to address the issue.

Frayne says it seems like the province is just rushing forward with more turbines and it’s time to slow down and really look at all the issues surrounding them.

She says there aren’t just more health studies needed, there are planning and land use issues, social issues and even issues with rural de-population.

Discussion got heated at times between councillors on whether supporting a moratorium was overstepping their boundaries or properly representing Huron County residents.

Councillors voted nine to six in favour of supporting a moratorium pending further study.
