Public meetings set for 1,000-turbine wind farm

A pair of Wyoming meetings will wrangle with the issues surrounding what could become one of the world’s largest wind farms. The Bureau of Land Management is hosting meetings in Saratoga and Rawlins, the two communities that would be most affected by the arrival of the massive wind farm. The public scoping meetings, according to the BLM, will provide an opportunity for the public and interested parties to ask BLM specialists questions, view maps and posters detailing the site-specific phases . . . RES withdraws plan to amend AM noise condition

University experts agree that RES’ proposals to replace wind farm noise condition are seriously flawed. West Devon Borough Council sought the advice of independent experts to assess the merits of a noise condition imposed upon the Den Brook Wind Farm, but the findings did not fall in favour of the applicants, Renewable Energy Systems Ltd (RES) who propose to build the wind farm in the Den Brook valley between Bow, Spreyton and North Tawton. RES have now withdrawn their plan . . . Complete story »

Wind turbines are everywhere out here

Donna Tisdale’s home office looks like something out of an episode of the TV show Hoarders. Paperwork spills off a crowded desk. Boxes are strewn on the floor. Every inch of space is consumed with reports, educational mailers, studies, and oversized maps of green-energy projects slated for the community of Boulevard. “Unfortunately, this is my full-time job right now,” she says. “It’s a whirlwind. Sometimes I stay up all night. Basically, it’s a shit storm, and it’s coming from all . . . Complete story »

Ocotillo residents complain of turbine noise similar to “jet engines”

When Pattern Energy presented its proposed Ocotillo Express Wind Facility project to Imperial County Supervisors, the company promised that massive industrial wind turbines would be no louder than a refrigerator or a library. But now residents are complaining that noise levels are far louder—and they’ve provided a video to bolster their claim. The problems foreshadow issues that East County residents could soon face when similar gargantuan wind turbines slated to be built in East County are completed – turbines 500 feet . . . Few Wyoming wind projects making progress

Wyoming didn’t add any new wind energy projects in 2012, and it would be a stretch to expect many to spring up in 2013. The state of the Wyoming wind power industry, at least this spring, is not optimal. Companies with projects and interest in Wyoming are slowly developing their projects, eyes on the day when they’ll be able to transmit their product to customers in other states. But those projects, for the most part, are years from completion. Some . . . Complete story »

Wind farm decision could be six months away

A decision on the proposed Cherry Tree wind farm could be six months away, with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to decide whether it should defer its decision until after the findings of two studies into health effects. It is expected to decide this week if it should postpone its decision pending a detailed study by the South Australian Environment Protection Authority into possible health effects of the Waterloo wind farm, and an update of a previous “rapid review” . . . Not in my backyard

Sharon Knowlton, from the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM), met with the Carbon County Commission on Tuesday to discuss potential routes for the TransWest transmission lines project. Knowlton, project manager for TransWest, said her office received has 60 letters opposing the project from residents in the Baggs/Dixon/Little Snake River Valley area. Commissioner John Espy said that the people who live in that area want to make sure the transmission lines are out of their line of sight. Knowlton said . . . Complete story »

Wind farm hinges on VCAT

A Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) hearing this week will ascertain whether a $100 million wind farm will get the go-ahead in central Victoria. Infigen Energy first intended to develop Cherry Tree Wind Farm outside of Seymour in the Trawool Valley, a project that would see 16 turbines generate up to 40 megawatts of power. But the proposal was unanimously rejected by the Mitchell Shire in late 2012, despite planning officers giving their tick of approval. The Shire said . . . Complete story »

Battle lines drawn in Boulevard to fight massive energy projects

More than 100 people packed into the fire station in Boulevard, voicing concerns, questions and outrage over plans to transform their rural community into an industrialized energy zone covering thousands of acres. By meeting’s end, it was clear that rural residents – buoyed by supporters from major activist and environmental groups in San Diego – are gearing up for the fight of their lives. “We need to change the standards in order to protect people,” said Donna Tisdale, who helped organize . . .
