A plan for a wind turbine which triggered protests among nearby residents has been rejected.
Farmer Neil Fell had wanted to build the 180ft structure – extending to 232ft including its blades – on land at Wheelbarrow Hall Farm at Aglionby, near Carlisle.
But councillors have rejected his application after being advised it would be “oppressive” to nearby residents.
That was despite evidence from Mr Fell to Carlisle City Council’s development control panel that money generated from the turbine would help keep his farm going.
Electricity from it would also be used to power homes in the area he lives in.
Mr Fell said: “This would not be a grab for money and then run to the hills.”
He also told the panel that he could remember the M6 motorway being built and the protests that surrounded its construction.
“Not all progress is bad,” he added.
Councillors were advised by case officer Suzanne Edgar to reject the application.
In a report she commented that the turbine would have a “detrimental impact” on people living in nearby properties “through an oppressive and dominant visual impact”.
After hearing comments from the public during at meeting at Carlisle’s Civic Centre, councillors voted unanimously to reject the application.
Details of the plans had triggered protests with people in nearby Scotby hitting out at the length of the initial consultation period, leading to that being extended. Of the comments submitted, 66 were opposed to the plans, and 40 were in favour.
