Developer decides not to submit application for Stamford wind project

A developer considering a 2.2-megawatt wind power project in Stamford has announced it won’t continue in the permitting process before the Vermont Public Utility Commission.
Norwich Technologies, manager of the Stamford Main Renewables wind turbine proposal, said in a media release, “To date, the project has had to delay its [permit application] filing multiple times due to the project being fed by a line from outside of Vermont with a utility that is not under Vermont rules. These delays have resulted in significant additional financial impacts that make the project infeasible at this time.”
The project was expected to require connections from the proposed site, near the town’s northeast corner, several miles from the Readsboro border and west of Route 8, with both Green Mountain Power utility lines and those of National Grid in Massachusetts.
In documents posted with the PUC, the developer had cited negotiation delays in discussions with National Grid as a cause of delays in submission of a full permit application to the state commission.
Officials with the company could not be reached Friday for further comment.
Norwich Technologies twice sought extensions of a permitting timeline for submission of their full application, with the most recent deadline set for Dec. 15.
The project also had prompted concerns or opposition from a number of town residents and town officials.
The wind proposal called for a a single 500-foot tall wind turbine with a 2.2 megawatt generating capacity, similar to a large solar panel array covering several acres of land.
