Energy plan would “desecrate Montgomeryshire”

Montgomeryshire is being urged to “stand up” against the shock news that an energy giant wants to carve through the old county with a pylon corridor linking a proposed windfarm near Cefn Coch with the National Grid in Shropshire.

The group that successfully fought a similar plan 12 years ago – Montgomeryshire Against Pylons (MAP) – is readying itself for another fight after Bute Energy’s shock announcement last week.

MAP said that the current proposals “will affect our area forever as well as our lives and those of our children” and has called a public meeting at Meifod Village Hall for 7pm on Monday, September 25.

Bute have said that the new energy plan will power tens of thousands of homes with green energy, with millions of pounds of money to pumped back into the local communities impacted.

But MAP is having none of it and said that the new plans are more damaging than those submitted by National Grid who had agreed 12 years ago to put some of their caballing underground.

It is proposed that the new power lines follow the same route as before on steel lattice pylons three times the height of Meifod Church tower, MAP have explained, adding that they have met sporadically over the past decade to keep an eye on the energy giants’ plans for the area.

The following is a statement in full from MAP:

“Whilst the need for greener, cheaper energy is accepted by us all, we have come such a long way since 2011. Technology has moved on and the efficacy and cost of other methods of producing energy now means that we believe there are better means to generate clean energy without the desecration of landscapes like we have here in Montgomeryshire.

“Not only is this part of the world loved by those who live in it, but visitors come to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the area which greatly assists the local economy, employing many.

“Here in Montgomeryshire, we feel we have already done our bit to achieve greener energy production with a considerable number of wind farms being built. We already export a lot more energy than we use locally. But we cannot allow our area to become saturated with giant turbines, substations, wires and steel pylons which will dwarf our landscape and destroy our precious uplands. This can only be counter-productive in trying to conserve carbon sinks and minimise the flooding risk downstream.

“There is nothing to suggest that the Bute projects and their associated lines do anything to upgrade a local energy network: we understand that the purpose of the line is to transport electricity into the grid at West Felton in Shropshire and therefore for onward transmission England.

“We urge all to stand up against the current proposals which will affect our area forever as well as our lives and those of our children.”
