DUNKIRK – Yellow signs lined the street along the Lake Erie shoreline Saturday as community members gathered to protest a planned wind farm project along the shore.
A few dozen concerned citizens gathered in Dunkirk’s Memorial Park for the rally. The protestors were met with a warm response from locals passing by on West Lake Shore Drive.
“Citizens Against Wind Turbines in Lake Erie,” the group responsible for the event, held another protest in the Town of Hamburg just last week.
This all comes as the nationwide debate over renewable energy grows more heated by the day.
Many demonstrators, like Gina Kron, cited the potential environmental and economic impacts to Western New York, and the lake, with some bringing up the recent failed State Thruway wind turbine project.
“Our Lake Erie is a gem of the City of Dunkirk, of the County of Chautauqua, of the State of New York,” Kron stressed. “We don’t have to be totally against wind turbines to support no turbines in Lake Erie, you only need to be pro-water. That’s what we’re trying to tell people.”
If constructed, the proposed project would contribute to New York’s goal of having 70 percent of energy in the state come from renewable sources by 2030.
