Action group mobilises to fight Garvary Wind Farm plan

A group campaigning against the planned Garvary Wind Farm is seeking volunteers and donations.
Struie Action Group was initially founded some five years ago in opposition to the Beinn Tharsuinn Wind Farm, which was consented but never built.
The action group is now being revitalised following the submission of a planning application to site 37 turbines, measuring 180m in height, on upland moorland east of the A836 and some 4.5km north of Lairg and 5.5km south of Bonar Bridge.
Two power companies have come together to progress the development – Coriolis Energy and the Electricity Supply Board Asset Development (ESB), which is Ireland’s part state owned electricity company.
An opponent said: “Of all the various schemes in progress, Garvary will have the greatest effect on the look of central Sutherland. It will dominate the southern margins of Lairg, views travelling east from Rosehall and worst, the Struie Viewpoint.”
Struie Action Group chairman Michael Baird, Bonar Bridge recently issued a newsletter which stated the group had paid £1500 to commission a “holding report” as its objection to the wind farm. It is now in need of funds.
He said: “Struie Action Group is against wind farms per se, nor indeed against renewable energy.
“What we are against is a wind farm which ruins our beautiful, unspoilt environment and natural heritage, which is the case with the Garvary project.”
