Knox County could be getting its first wind farm should the county board approve it at tonight’s meeting.
The decision could be highly controversial. According to board documents, over the course of three public hearings in late April and earlier this month, 17 people spoke in favor of the wind farm while 14 spoke against, and the Zoning Board of Appeals had 18 written comments on the wind farm project and 17 written comments against it.
The 150-megawatt project would see up to 60 turbines in Ontario, Walnut Grove, Lynn, Copley, and Victoria Townships covering less than one percent of 23,000 acres of private land.
The project developer, Orion Renewable Energy Group, says that the ROWVA school district would see $21.8 million in property tax revenue from the project while local fire protection districts would see $2 million, road districts would see $2.8 million over the course of the next 25 years.
