HENDERSON – The Town Council last week adopted a resolution to oppose wind energy development near Fort Drum.
According to the resolution, the board supports any legislation banning wind energy facility construction within 50 miles of the base to “ensure the national security and continued readiness for future training missions” and stands against the projects undergoing state Article 10 review. The town’s resolution follows the adoption of similar policies from other local governing bodies including the Watertown City Council, the Clayton Town Council and the Parishville Town Council.
“We believe that any initiative that has even the remotest possibility of interfering with the mission capability of Fort Drum should be avoided at all costs,” Supervisor John J. Culkin said in an email. “Its essential contribution to the safety of this nation and its irreplaceable role as the economic engine of the North Country cannot be over-emphasized.”
