ALGONA—On Tuesday, May 24, the Kossuth County Board of Supervisors held a first reading on a moratorium for wind farm projects in Kossuth County for a period of six months.
The moratorium idea was forwarded to the county from the planning and zoning commission, as the county has no ordinance in place for the size of wind farms being proposed to being placed within Kossuth County.
A hearing held before the first reading of the ordinance had no public in attendance, nor did the planning and zoning commission for the county.
“We’re hearing proposals from several companies about large wind farms proposed for this area, but have nothing in our ordinances which address wind farm projects of these sizes,” explained Doug Miller, Kossuth County engineer. “It’s a good idea to place a moratorium on these projects to be able to receive public comments and draft an ordinance regulating wind farms within the county.”
