Wind mills in Maine: more projects proposed

Credit:  Written by Laura Smith | 29 February 2016 | www.foxbangor.com ~~

The state of Maine could see more wind projects developed in the coming years after a number of new proposals have been submitted by southern New England states.

Patrick Woodcock, Director for the Governor’s Energy Office, says this is a huge question for Maine and the future of using renewable energy.

Some supporters of wind energy believe it would provide cleaner energy, lower costs, add jobs and economic growth.

Those in opposition say the industry will bring high impacts and low benefits, turbines could have a negative impact on wildlife, and will ruin the state’s brand of beauty.

Woodcock said the proposals are coming from Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

“Proposals to supply southern New England with a whole host of clean energy with wind in the state of Maine.” said Woodcock.

He said most of the projects are in early developing stages and that little information is known.

The state will review and monitor projects wanting to develop here.

Woodcock said they will hold public hearings before anything moves forward.
