Wind turbine proposal turned down in west Norfolk

A proposal to build nine wind turbines in west Norfolk has been turned down by councillors today.
The plans for the turbines, measuring up to 127m in height, were recommended for approval by West Norfolk Council’s planning committee.
The company behind the proposals, Coriolis Energy, last week pledged more jobs and cash, should consent be given.
The proposed development on 270 hectares of agricultural land near Terrington St Clement and Clenchwarton, overlooking The Wash, was opposed by Terrington St Clement and Clenchwarton parish councils and North-west Norfolk MP Henry Bellingham.
Mr Bellingham said the nine onshore wind turbines would provide minimal benefit at a substantial environmental cost.
However, the project received local support – 261 letters were submitted by people in favour of the project compared with 192 letters of objection.
Coriolis Energy said the turbines could generate enough electricity to power about 9,800 homes.
Project manager Cath Ibbotson said last week that, should consent be granted, a community fund of £112,500 would be provided each year of operation for community projects, based on 2.5MW turbines being used, and would increase with inflation.
In addition, business rates, totalling around £200,000, would also be payable to West Norfolk Council and up to 30 people would be employed during the construction period, she said.
