Storm blows up over Fence wind farm

Fears greenbelt land could be ‘spoiled’ forever have been voiced after plans to erect two wind turbines has been submitted to Pendle Council.
Jackie Commons, who has lived in Fence for 20 years, said she is ‘amazed’ permission has been sought for the site in Wood End Road after plans to build a wind farm there in 2010 met fierce opposition.
Pendle Council has erected a sign at the entrance to Moor Isles Farm that states the land is a conservation area and if anyone objects to the plans for the two 35-metre 100kw turbines, they must voice their opposition by September 3.
Mrs Commons said: “It’s summertime and people here just aren’t aware. It feels like the council is trying to sneak this in without us noticing.
“Everyone who lives in this area will be appalled because we have already fought off plans for a wind farm once.
“More than the turbines spoiling the view from all over Pendle, it’s the fact that this is greenbelt land and once it’s gone, it’s spoiled forever. If this goes ahead, it sets a precedent for the future. If they don’t protect greenbelt land here, why would they protect it anywhere?”
The new planning application was submitted by Urban Wind Ltd.
The news comes as Pendle’s angry Tory councillors said a ‘planning overhaul’ was needed in the borough to protect the landscape from wind turbines.
They say they have asked the chief executive to look into the options for a planning restructure.
Paul White, deputy leader of Pendle Conservatives and councillor for the Boulsworth ward, has slammed Nelson Labour councillors, who are approving a turbine at Floyt Bridge Farm in Delves Lane.
Coun White, who is also responsible for Tourism in Pendle said “We have consistently protected the beautiful countryside around Colne, and if Nelson think they can just go about destroying our area because it doesn’t affect them then we’ve got to do something about it”
“Many of the applications around Colne have gone to appeal, and been thrown out by the planningiInspector, so we know that in Colne we’re doing the right thing.
“ I can see a solution to this, and that’s for a politically balanced central planning committee to deal with them.”
