Commissioners Court approves resolution opposing southside wind farm

A resolution to oppose the development of a wind farm in Corpus Christi’s southside was voted on and approved by the Nueces County Commissioners Court Wednesday morning.

Opposition to the wind farm, which is planned by APEX Wind Energy to be located in the Chapman Ranch area, believe the new development would not allow the city to continue growing farther south. Proponents, however, believe the City should welcome a new source of clean energy.

Area broadcasters also attended Wednesday’s meeting. One broadcaster, Kiii-TV General Manager Dan Robbins, pointed out that the position of the proposed wind farm would block broadcast digital signals to the Corpus Christi area, and that would pose a serious public safety issue during emergencies such as hurricanes, tornados or other severe weather situations. The broadcast towers of local radio and TV stations are located behind the proposed wind farm.

Back in March, City Council unanimously passed a resolution going on record to oppose wind farm development in the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction. Then, in April, it ordered the city manager to begin the process of annexation for the area.

The approval by the county of Wednesday resolution does not mean that the project will not happen, but it does mean that both the City and County have gone on the record in opposition to the APEX wind farm development.
