Applications for windfarms at Strathaven refused by South Lanarkshire Council

Three separate planning applications to build wind turbines around the Strathaven area have been refused.
The first application by Mr G Leggat, of North Carnduff, Chapelton, was to erect a 46.5m wind turbine at his farm. The turbine was designed to have an operational life of 20 years with the electricity generated feeding into the national grid.
However, the application attracted a response from BAA Aerodrome Safeguarding who said the turbine would be visible to Glasgow Airport’s Primary Surveillance Radar. For the application to be passed, BAA would have needed further information from the applicant. However, no further correspondence from Mr Leggat was received and the application was refused.
A second application to build a Mono Pole Wind Turbine Hub Height of 36.4m on a field south east of North Torfoot Farm, Strathaven, was also considered at a meeting of South Lanarkshire Council’s Planning Committee last week.
This application by The Green Company attracted no letters of objection and three letters of support.
The application was, however, refused on the grounds that it would have an adverse impact on views from key tourist routes/transport corridors.
The third application to be considered by councillors was the erection of two 50kw wind turbines by applicant Robert Hamilton at mid Shawtonhill Farm, Chapelton. This application attracted the same problems raised by BAA and as Mr Hamilton did not provided any further information the application was also recommended for refusal.
