Wisconsin Public Service Corp. is dismantling two wind turbines off Shirley Road, saying they have served their purpose and are no longer needed.
WPS spokesman Kerry Spees said the turbines, which went online at the Glenmore Wind Energy Facility in early 1988, were built to study “the feasibility of generating electricity from the wind” in the area. The site had 197-foot towers, with turbine blades extending another 75 feet. At capacity, the site could generate about 1,200 kilowatts of electricity, or enough to power about 280 homes.
An eight-turbine wind farm later was erected nearby in the hamlet of Shirley. It continues to operate.
