Landowner appeals after windfarm is rejected

A Buchan landowner is to appeal after his plans for a contentious windfarm were blocked by councillors earlier this year.

An appeal has been lodged by Mr William Hutcheon following Aberdeenshire Council’s refusal of consent for the erection of three 20kw wind turbines at Upper Aucheoch, Maud.

In a letter to the Buchan area committee, agents Enviko said that the local farming business would own and manage the wind turbines and therefore the profit generated would be fully absorbed by the local business, thereby creating an additional stable income stream and supporting existing and potential new employment on the farm.

“We believe the proposal is consistent with the government renewable energy policy which includes a specific aim of promoting the interests of the rural economy. Those interests include the farming industry.”

Members of the area committee rejected the application at their meeting in May.

They wanted to give Mr Hutcheon the opportuntiy to submit revised plans, moving the turbines further north.

However, Mr Hutcheon said he was not keen on drawing up fresh plans adding that there was not enough time to do it as timescales were very tight.

Mr Hutcheon has now tabled an appeal with the Scottish Government’s Department for Planning and Environmental Appeals.

A reporter will be appointed to assess the case with the findings due to be published in October.
