Residents say no to wind farm

Residents packed the community hall in Comeau’s Hill Thursday night and made it clear they are against a wind farm project planned for their community.

They expressed various concerns regarding the project, saying they worry what it could do to their health, the environment and wildlife, among other things.

They urged the Municipality of Argyle to take action similar to that taken in King’s County, where big wind-energy project development has been put on hold, at least for the near future.

The meeting – which drew an estimated 100 people – was a heated one, residents angrily saying they know very little about the wind farm being proposed by Anaia Global Renewable Energies.

Some said they didn’t realize the project was planned for the Comeau’s Hill/Little River Harbour area, noting that the project had been referred to as the Wedgeport wind farm.

They say the project will result in reduced property values and that this, in turn, will offset any increased tax revenue the Municipality of Argyle might get from the proposed wind farm.

Natasha d’Entremont-O’Connell, who opened the meeting with some remarks on behalf of residents concerned about the project, said, “We all need to work together on this very important matter and, unfortunately, time is not on our side.”

Argyle MLA Chris d’Entremont, who was on hand to help facilitate the discussion, said he supports the community in its concerns about the project, as did Junior Murphy, who represents the Comeau’s Hill area on Argyle municipal council.

Argyle Warden Aldric d’Entremont, one of the Argyle council members who attended Thursday’s meeting, said council would hold a special meeting to discuss the issue, although a date for the meeting was not given.
