Election Lineup: Five challengers for two seats in Merritt Township in wake of windfarm controversy

MERRITT TOWNSHIP, MI – Eight candidates are challenging incumbents running for office in Merritt Township.
Clerk Kathy Bremer said that the number of challengers is a result of a proposed windfarm that divided the community.
Vying for supervisor are incumbent Democrat Dave Schabel, 1601 Knight Road, against Democrat Dan VanMullekom, 585 W. Munger, and Republican William Schumacher, 405 E. Munger.
Two trustee seats have netted seven candidates, including incumbents Ben DuRussel, 1404 Markel, a Democrat, and Cindy Mead, 100 Russell Road, a Republican. The other candidates include Democrats Ray Vermeesch, 684 Finn; Michael Sikorski, 1756 Cotter; and Ken VanDenBoom, 9121 E. Munger; and Republicans Glenn C. Meyer, 797 S. Nolet Road; and Craig Histed, 2572 Burns Road.
Republican Treasurer Tina Fleischmann, 2117 S. Farley, is hoping to retain her seat against challenger and fellow Republican Kathleen Kratz, 193 W. Munger.
Incumbent Clerk Kathy Bremer, 146 E. Kinney Road, a Republican, is running unopposed.
