SOMERSET – Two companies have delivered wind turbine reports just as the Somerset County Planning Commission considered fining them for noncompliance.
County planner Bill Lehman said Thursday that Lookout Wind Power and Forward Wind Power have sent in their decommissioning reports.
Lookout’s report involves 18 turbines in Brothersvalley and Northampton townships; Forward’s is for 14 turbines in Shade Township.
The reports are mandated for turbines after one year of operation and every five years thereafter. Wind farm violators are subject to a fine of $500 per day, per turbine.
The purpose of the ordinance is to make sure the money is there for the county to remove the windmills – that they don’t become a blight should they become nonoperational for any reason – and for site restoration.
