WEST BRANCH – The Ogemaw County Board of Commissioners approved a six-month moratorium for any new wind turbine projects within the county, during its May 26 meeting.
The motion passed with a 6-1 vote. Commissioner Beverly Scott cast the dissenting vote.
The motion was made on recommendations from the county’s attorney, in order to give the planning commission more time to look at regulations and fees for future sites.
Late last year, the county planning commission voted to allow Smiley Energy Services LLC to construct windmills in Cumming Township. The moratorium does not affect that project, because it has already been approved, but stops any future projects for the next six months, unless the motion is rescinded prior to that point.
