Killing tourism

Credit:  The Scotsman, scostman.com 3 February 2011 ~~

I refer to the letter “Tourists put off” from Celia Hobbs (1 February).
I have read the Moffat report and other surveys on the subject of tourists and wind farms and they are all lightweight, somewhat skewed and thoroughly unconvincing unless, perhaps, you are a developer, the First Minister or his energy and tourism minister, until May, Jim Mather.

I do my own survey when out and about in what is still, just, bonnie Scotland.

I have asked visitors from the USA, Holland, Denmark, New Zealand and other countries if they have seen a wind farm on their visit to Scotland.

Mostly answer “yes” so I ask them how they feel about a wind farm in the Scottish landscape and they all say they spoil it – and their visitor experience. It’s not what they come to Scotland to see.

Unfortunately, the Scottish Government has an agenda and a target which will lead to more wind farms in sensitive locations, most of Scotland, and at some stage visitors will stay away.
