Wind farm plan to go to hearing

A hearing is to be held into plans to construct a 20-turbine wind farm near Muir of Ord in Ross-shire.

The proposal by Scottish and Southern Energy has attracted 255 letters of support and 111 against.

Highland Council officials have recommended giving it the go-ahead. Ross, Skye and Lochaber committee will hold a hearing on Tuesday in Dingwall.

The site in Fairburn Estate provides habitat for rare birds such as hen harrier, red kite and golden plover.

Scottish Natural Heritage is opposing the plans on landscape grounds, but said this could be resolved with the removal of four turbines.

The proposed location covering about 1,235 acres on the slopes of Beinn an Rubha Riabhaidh is not one of the local authority’s preferred sites for a major wind farm development.
