A massive wind farm project in Gray County is on hold today because County Commissioners decided more information is needed.
The wind farm is proposed by T. Boone Pickens, who would like orthern Gray County to be designated as a reinvestment zone so they can apply for a tax abatement. It would give Mesa Power a tax break for 5 to 10 years, before having to pay 100% of the property taxes. The wind farm is designed to bring about 1400 hundred generators and hundreds of jobs to the area.
“The project would roughly bring about 272 jobs if that figurees holds out. It would bring over the course of 5 or 6 years. said Mesa Representative Ron Harris.
Opponents say pickens doesn’t need a tax break.
“So many people here that have built Gray County and they’ve paid their taxes, year, after year, after year. I just feel like Mr. Pickens and his wind farm machine, I think he ought to pay his fair share of taxes if he’s going to come in here.” said Kathleene Greene of Pampa.
Those for the rezoning say the tax break is needed so they can begin the project.
