Hoeven denies Ducks Unlimited land purchase

Governor Hoeven has denied a Sheridan County land purchase by Ducks Unlimited.
The hunters group that buys and preserves wetlands wanted to buy two-thousand-320 acres of private land in the Coteau Hills southeast of McClusky.
Hoeven says the land already is protected. He says the group’s acquistion quote “would not create any significant new level of protection.”
Ducks Unlimited officials could not immediately be reached for comment. The group’s Great Plains regional office in Bismarck is closed today.
North Dakota limits the number of nonprofit groups allowed to buy land and requires government approval for any land purchases.
The governor has the final nod.
Last month the Natural Areas Acquisition Advisory Committee advised the governor to deny the sale.
Opponents have said that there is already enough land in Sheridan County set aside for wildlife and that the sale could hurt economic development by restricting the placement of wind turbines or pipelines.
