Love Canal Lawyer Hired by Opposition Group

Perry landowner Valary Sahrle founded CHURN (Citizens for Healthy Rural Neighborhoods) to oppose Horizon Wind Energy’s wind farm proposal in Perry. To make sure their side is heard at Perry Town Board meetings, Sahrle’s group has hired environmental lawyer Richard Lippes of Buffalo.
Lippes is known for his legal work defending victims in the Love Canal disaster. He represented them in related cases throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Lippes contends stray electricity from wind turbines can harm peoples’ health. He also contends they can be damaging to the environment because they kill bats and birds that fly into the moving blades.
CHURN’s move is significant, because it’s the first time Lippes has been retained by a wind opposition group.
