St Andrews University asks Government to rule on Kenly windfarm plan

St Andrews University has criticised Fife Council’s handling of its windfarm proposals and said it has a better chance of a fair hearing by going to the Scottish Government. The institution hopes to become the first university in the country to generate all its own energy through wind power by erecting six 330ft turbines at Kenly Farm, near Boarhills. However, the plans are yet to be considered by councillors despite being lodged with officers in May last year. Voicing its . . . Complete story »

Radar fears convince government reporter to reject Largoward wind turbines plan

The door has been closed on a bid to build two 330ft turbines near Largoward in north-east Fife. A Scottish Government reporter has concluded the Largoward Windmills, as they were to be known, would have risked public safety by interfering with air traffic control at RAF Leuchars. He also cited the ”significant” visual impact for two houses within 1640 feet of the development. Cupar man Gordon Pay wanted to install the turbines at South Cassingray Farm, a mile east of . . . Public opposition is mounting against a proposed windfarm in Angus. Nearly 100 objections have been submitted to Angus Council against the Govals Farm windfarm application, which was sent to the local authority in July. The plans to build six 87 metre wind turbines at the site south-east of Glamis were submitted by consultancy firm Green Cat Renewables on behalf of land owner David Cooper. Members of the public began to make their feelings on the plans known after a consultation . . . Complete story »

Lochgelly locals petition for benzene monitoring near Fife Ethylene Plant turbines

Residents living in the shadow of a petrochemical plant have called for enhanced monitoring of cancer-causing pollutants as a windfarm is erected nearby. With the first turbine up beside Fife Ethylene Plant, there are fears that benzene will be dispersed by the rotating blades. A petition has been launched in Lochgelly, one of the nearest settlements to Little Raith windfarm, calling for permanent monitoring at several locations. In addition to Kennedy Renewables’ nine 410-feet turbines at Mossmorran, a further two . . . Complete story »

Newburgh Community Trust to appeal windfarm refusal

A bid to build the first community-owned turbines in the east of Scotland has been given a second wind. Those behind the Newburgh Wind Farm have announced they are taking the plans blown out by Fife Council to the Scottish Government. There was intense disappointment among supporters of the pioneering scheme – and great cheer among opponents – when it was blocked by the council’s north-east Fife area committee two months ago. But Newburgh Community Trust has confirmed it will appeal the . . . Complete story »

Campaign group claims public need to know more about Neart na Gaoithe offshore windfarm

The public are still unaware of the massive scale and impact of a major North Sea offshore windfarm development, a countryside protection group has warned. Up to 125 turbines will be constructed off the coast of Fife and Angus if global energy developer Mainstream Renewable Power is given the green light for its £1.4 billion project. Less than a fortnight remains for the public to make their views known to Marine Scotland, which manages Scotland’s waters for the Scottish Government. . . . Complete story »

GSK’s plans in doubt after Montrose wind turbines refused

The future of the GlaxoSmithKline factory in Montrose has been left unclear after the company was refused planning permission for two wind turbines. Angus Council’s development standards committee voted 9-2 in favour of refusing the worldwide pharmaceutical giant permission to build the turbines, stating that it would have a negative impact on the landscape, environment and skyline of the town. The 2.5MW machines would have measured up to 85 metres in height to the hub, with a maximum height to . . . Complete story »

GlaxoSmithKline ‘disappointed’ by report recommending refusal of wind turbines

The chemicals giant behind plans for turbines in an Angus town says it is disappointed the local council has recommended they be refused. Global company and main Montrose employer GlaxoSmithKline told The Courier the two 430ft wind turbines are the best option for its Cobden Street site’s power generation needs. However, a report due before members of the development standards committee on Tuesday recommends refusal. Council report recommends refusing GlaxoSmithKline’s turbines plan for Montrose

Two massive wind turbines proposed for the centre of an Angus community are set to be rebuffed due to ”unacceptable” visual and landscape impact. Chemicals firm GlaxoSmithKline applied to Angus Council to put up two wind turbines – measuring up to 85 metres to hub and 132 metres to blade tip – at its Cobden Street plant in Montrose. A report due before members of the development standards committee next week recommends refusal. Critics of GSK’s bid to offset its plant’s energy . . . Complete story »
