Emera’s $2B Atlantic Link loses bid for Massachusetts clean energy deal

Emera’s $2-billion Atlantic Link project, a proposed 563-kilometre underwater power transmission cable, has failed to win a deal to bring clean energy to southern Massachusetts. A news release from Massachusetts Clean Energy on Thursday said Northern Pass Transmission’s proposal was chosen, but the final acceptance of that bid depends on regulatory approval from the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities. Northern Pass Transmission is a partnership between Hydro-Québec and Eversource, an energy company in New England. ‘We think this project has . . . Complete story »

3 municipalities see future in building wind farms together

Three communities with their own utilities are joining forces on a proposal to generate more wind energy in New Brunswick. Saint John Energy and smaller utilities in Edmundston, and Perth-Andover have submitted joint proposals to develop two wind energy projects, the Charlotte County Community Wind Farm, near South Oromocto Lake, and Chapman Community Wind Farm in Chapmanville in Carleton County. Each of the proposed projects would generate enough electricity to power 6,400 households, said Dan Dionne, chief administrative officer for . . . Complete story »

No more room for wind power, energy minister says in wake of export proposal

Nova Scotia’s grid can’t absorb any more wind power, the province’s energy minister says, even if it had access to electricity that under a major new proposal would be generated here and exported to the United States. Last week, Emera Inc. revealed a formal proposal for the Atlantic Link project, a 1,000-megawatt subsea cable that would send green energy from Atlantic Canada to the Boston area with connection points at Coleson Cove, N.B., and Plymouth, Mass. Seventy per cent of . . . Complete story »

Emera ups the stakes with Atlantic Link; Plan would deliver clean power to Massachusetts

Energy giant Emera Inc. is upping the amount of electricity it wants to carry on its proposed $2-billion Atlantic Link energy corridor from New Brunswick to Massachusetts. The approximately 563-kilometre high-voltage direct current transmission line and its two converter stations, one at Coleson Cove and the other in Boston near the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, was originally expected to carry 900 megawatts of clean energy when it was announced in January. That energy load has now been beefed up to . . . Complete story »

Emera Inc. bids to deliver wind energy, hydro power to Massachusetts

Emera Inc. says it has submitted a competitive bid to deliver 900 megawatts of wind energy and hydro power from Atlantic Canada to Massachusetts by 2022. If successful, the main source of that power would likely be wind farms yet to be built in New Brunswick. The company said because wind power can be unreliable, the proposal will also use on hydro power, including power from the Muskrat Falls hydro-electric dam being constructed in Labrador and due to come online . . . Community wind farm proposed for Sackville

SACKVILLE, N.B. – Sackville’s winds could soon be put to good use. An Ontario-based energy company is hoping to build a small wind farm just on the edge of town, a proposal that would involve some community ownership in the project. Town council heard plans earlier this month from ProWind Canada Inc. for a 20MW wind farm off Baseline Road, an area a few kilometres from the Walker Road reservoir. Rochelle Rumney, the company’s director of project planning, explained ProWind . . . Complete story »

Dark Harbour eyed as site for $60 million wind farm proposal

About 60 people attended a public meeting at the Grand Manan school on April 5 with representatives of Innergex, a Longueuil, Quebec‑based company, that is proposing a wind farm at Dark Harbour on the western side of the island. Under a provincial renewable energy program, New Brunswick Power is seeking proposals to provide up to 40 megawatts of renewable energy each from First Nations and from “local entities” such as communities or regional service commissions. Innergex approached the village last . . . Complete story »

N.L. government interested in new Atlantic Link

Emera Inc. has plans to run a submarine power cable from New Brunswick to Massachusetts, and is looking for partners with power to spare, willing to partner on a plan to feed the U.S. marketplace. And Premier Dwight Ball said this province might look to get in on the deal. “Well, right now this is very early days,” Ball said when asked about the link project after a speech to the Heavy Civil Association of Newfoundland and Labrador on Thursday. . . . Little disclosure on wind turbine bird mortality

I just read “What’s a few chopped up birds” (From The Top of the Pile, Sept. 22) on wind turbines and bird deaths in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Way to go Saskatchewan for actually taking this issue seriously. We’ve never had this happen in Ontario! I’m from southwestern Ontario, but moved to New Brunswick two years ago when the turbines went up. For six years I fought them, went to tribunal hearings, videotaped the scummy company Nextera destroying an active eagle . . . Complete story »

Grand Bay-Westfield could see wind farm built in area

A couple of landowners in Grand Bay-Westfield say they’ve been approached by a Halifax company that’s interested in building a wind farm. “It certainly makes sense to me,” said Ed DeSaulniers, who co-owns 162 hectares in an area which he describes as a natural wind tunnel. The parcel that he purchased 20 years ago, lies near Mitchell Road. DeSaulniers said it’s one of the highest points in the river valley with sweeping views of the St. John River. But from . . .
