Wind turbine project sets sights on Bon Homme and Charles Mix counties

Another big wind project wants to make South Dakota its home.

Prevailing Winds could have as many 100 turbines in Bon Homme and Charles Mix counties, with 160 South Dakota investors, according to company documents. The investors’ group was also involved with the Beethoven Wind farm near Tripp that NorthWestern Energy purchased in 2015.

The state Public Utilities Commission plans a public input meeting on the Prevailing Winds project at Avon School at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24.

The project’s potential nameplate capacity is 201 megawatts. The turbines would be built along the Dry Choteau Creek that runs through the Choteau Creek Valley.

The federal Western Area Power Administration is building a new switching station within the project area. The electricity would move over a WAPA line. The project would have an underground system collecting electricity from the turbines and a substation.
