National Grid has said it intends to build a new power line through north Shropshire as part of plans for new windfarms in mid Wales.
The Welsh assembly has highlighted the region as a key area for windfarms that could supply up to 450,000 homes.
Jeremy Lee, project manager, said 10 possible routes through Shropshire linking the windfarms to the National Grid had been identified.
The company said a public consultation had begun.
A decision on the final route will be made in the summer. If planning permission is granted, the project could be completed by 2015.

Mr Lee said the 400,000 volt line could be built on pylons, or buried underground, although overhead lines offered a much cheaper option.
The route would join a proposed sub station between Abermule and Cefn Coch to an existing line that runs between Wrexham and Shrewsbury.
The possible routes run through a 10-mile-wide corridor from the mid Wales border to an area south east of Oswestry.
A series of public meetings begins on 23 March, with the consultation period scheduled to close on 3 June.
