Spatiotemporal structure of wind farm–atmospheric boundary layer interactions
Abstract – Observations and modelling studies show that wind farms can alter their local microclimate. This study examines the effect of real-world wind farms on land surface temperatures in West Central Texas using the Weather Research and Forecasting model under realistic boundary conditions. Three wind turbine parameterizations, including two developed in this study, are used for model sensitivity experiments. The simulated effects of wind farms on temperatures match the spatial patterns observed in satellite data but are weaker in magnitude. The . . . Complete article »

Satellite Observations of Wind Farm Impacts on Nocturnal Land Surface Temperature in Iowa
Abstract: Wind farms (WFs) are believed to have an impact on lower boundary layer meteorology. A recent study examined satellite-measured land surface temperature data (LST) and found a local nighttime warming effect attributable to a group of four large WFs in Texas. This study furthers their work by investigating the impacts of five individual WFs in Iowa, where the land surface properties and climate conditions are different from those in Texas. Two methods are used to assess WF impacts: first, . . . Complete article »

Diurnal and seasonal variations of wind farm impacts on land surface temperature over western Texas
Abstract: This paper analyzes seasonal and diurnal variations of MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land surface temperature (LST) data at ~1.1 km for the period of 2003–2011 over a region in West-Central Texas, where four of the world’s largest wind farms are located. Seasonal anomalies are created from MODIS Terra (~10:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. local solar time) and Aqua (~1:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. local solar time) LSTs, and their spatiotemporal variability is analyzed by comparing the LST changes . . . Impacts of wind farms on land surface temperature
[abstract] The wind industry in the United States has experienced a remarkably rapid expansion of capacity in recent years and this fast growth is expected to continue in the future. While converting wind’s kinetic energy into electricity, wind turbines modify surface–atmosphere exchanges and the transfer of energy, momentum, mass and moisture within the atmosphere. These changes, if spatially large enough, may have noticeable impacts on local to regional weather and climate. Here we present observational evidence for such impacts based . . . Complete article »
