Spillage prevention and control

Kittitas Valley Wind Power

Section 2.9 of the Kittitas Valley (Washington) Wind Power Project EFSEC Application

This is the environmental analysis that describes the quantities of oil in each 1.5-MW GE wind turbine: 50 gallons of glycol-water mix in the generator cooling system, 85 gallons of hydraulic oil in the hydraulic systems (blades, brake, yaw, etc.), and 105 gallons of lubricating oil in the gearbox lubrication.

In addition, each turbine has a transformer at the base of the tower, containing 500 gallons of mineral oil for cooling. And the substation where the facility is connected to the grid will contain up to 12,000 gallons of mineral oil for cooling.

These fluids have to be replaced at regular intervals, and drums of replacement oil would be kept on the site.
