More calls for cancellation of wind projects

By David Foot | Quinte News | October 19th, 2017 | www.quintenews.com

A community group opposed to a wind farm on Amherst Island says that project and one proposed for Prince Edward County, are part of the reason hydro costs are so high.

The Association to Protect Amherst Island says both projects need to be factored into the costs that are being hidden by the Ontario Government and both need to be cancelled if the province “genuinely want to cut costs for consumers”.

A release issued by the group Thursday says “Ontario’s power needs are already taken care of well into the future” and both projects are not needed.

The Alliance to Protect Prince Edward County has made similar claims in regards to the White Pines Project and held a rally against that project last weekend, as it takes the company back to court next month in a further attempt to get it cancelled.

The Independent Electricity System Operator would be the body tasked with cancelling either project and wouldn’t comment on that possibility to Quinte News, since the White Pines project is before the courts.

WPD tells our newsroom it is confident in its ability to move forward with the project, with completion by next fall and “will present arguments to the court and a judge will make a decision based on the law”.
