The Mayor of Bluewater says his Council is waiting to hear back from NextEra Energy and Northland Power on its questions surrounding the safety of wind turbines in the municipality.
Tyler Hessel tells us some of his Councillors have been told by several farmers that sensors have been falling from several turbines onto their fields.
He says there are no pictures or documentation to accompany the farmers’ claims.
Council is concerned because some of the turbines are set close to municipal and County roads.
Hessel relates that an official with NextEra he spoke with is not aware of any reports about parts falling from turbines in Bluewater, and that Council can expect to receive a report.
He mentions that Council has been told that turbine blades have been slowed down to a near-stop, to permit harvesting operations.
NextEra says that has been the case at a number of its wind farms across the province during harvest season.
The company says there have been problems with a small thin plastic attachment separating from turbine blades and falling to the ground.
As we reported earlier this week, Huron-Bruce MPP and PC Environment Critic Lisa Thompson asked Environment Minister Glen Murray for a safety audit on wind turbines.
Murray told the Legislature that a review would be premature, but is willing to meet with Thompson to discuss the issue.
