North Gower wind farm in limbo as company fails to qualify

The plan by German company Prowind to build a wind farm in North Gower is a no-go for now, since the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) deemed it not a qualified applicant.

This has residents, who feared the farm’s close proximity to schools and homes, cheering. But that cheering could be premature.

Ottawa Wind Concerns is a local group that had been advocating against the wind farm. Jane Wilson, spokesperson for the group, says she’s cautiously optimistic about the development.

“We really feel that the community is now safe from what was going to be a really inappropriate power project.”

A spokesperson for the OPA said in an email any companies that fail to qualify will have an opportunity for debrief to help them improve their submissions to any future procurement. Prowind could not be reached for comment on whether or not it’d take these steps.

Rideau-Goulbourn Scott Moffatt said there’s another possibility; another company could pick up the North Gower wind farm plans. He said he’s not aware of any other company that’s planning to do so, but he’s still not ready to declare the controversial wind farm plans dead.

“I wouldn’t want to proclaim any victory,” he said.
