Suncor wind project approval appealed

Recent provincial approval of Suncor’s plan to build a 46-turbine wind project in Plympton-Wyoming and Warwick Township has been appealed to Ontario’s Environment Review Tribunal.

Appeals were filed by Monday’s deadline by an individual and Lambton County. Plympton-Wyoming has also applied to be part of the appeal.

County council voted earlier this year to appeal Suncor’s Cedar Point wind project, after it received provincial renewable energy approval. That approval came in August.

“The county’s arguments are based on traffic safety implications arising from the construction of both collection lines and transmission lines,” said David Cribbs, the county’s general manager of corporate services.

“You have to base your arguments either on threats to human health or irreversible threats to wildlife and the natural environment.

“The county’s argument is that the infrastructure, the transmission and collection lines that support the turbines, where built along road allowances, has the potential to cause serious health consequences to the travelling public.”

Cribbs said he understands the individual who has appealed is connected with Were Against Industrial Turbines, Plympton-Wyoming, a residents’ group opposed to the project.

Cribbs said that if the appeals go to a hearing, it could be expected to be scheduled for the fall.

“These move, by legal standards, at lightening speed,” he said.
