Rules changes too late, turbine opponents say

They’ve been asking for it for years, but it seems some local wind turbine opponents aren’t satisfied with new rules for green energy projects.

Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli has announced the Ontario government will now give municipalities more control over wind project approvals.

Middlesex Wind Action Group spokesperson Esther Wrightman says it’s too little too late.

Wrightman says although there are currently no wind turbines in Middlesex County there are already 70 approved for the area.

Under the new rules wind energy companies must work with municipalities before they can ask for approval from the Ontario Power Authority.

Chiarelli says that should give municipalities more say over where the wind projects can be located.

Wrightman says she would rather have a moratorium on wind turbines altogether, instead of the new rules.
