Wind turbine opponents plan Toronto rally

The president of a local wind turbine group is urging turbine opponents to join a rally planned for April 3 in Toronto.

Janet Vallery, president of the Oppose Belwood Wind Farm Association, said a similar demonstration held during last year’s Liberal leadership convention attracted about 850 people from across the province who oppose wind turbines located close to residences in rural parts of Ontario.

And despite assurances by Premier Kathleen Wynne that her government will consider local input before approving new wind turbine projects, Vallery said opponents have yet to get a firm commitment. She was critical of the premier for not talking directly with residents impacted by turbines and those who may be impacted by new projects. Her group contends wind turbines placed within close proximity to rural homes present a health hazard.

“We have to keep getting our message out.”

The demonstration will be held close to the Metro Convention Centre where wind turbine companies are hosting a convention.

Local residents can board a bus around 9:50am outside the Walmart in Orangeville, Vallery said.
